On the Grand Strand, the calendar runs on seasons: summer visitors, fall festivals, holiday guests and a spring rush when rentals fill up again. For many homeowners, the cooler months are the best time of year to remodel. Here’s why, and how to plan a project that’s finished when you need it.
Why fall and winter work so well
- Fewer guests and bookings. If you own a second home or rental, the off-season lets you work without cancelling stays. For primary homes, it’s a quieter stretch before spring.
- Hurricane season wraps up. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30. After that, there’s less chance of storm-related delays.
- Comfortable working conditions. Milder temperatures and lower humidity help with painting, tile curing and keeping doors open during demolition.
- Finish before spring. Starting in fall or winter means your new bathroom, floors or kitchen backsplash are ready for warmer months, open houses or the next booking season.
Plan backward from your finish date
The biggest timeline surprises usually come before construction starts: design decisions, material selections and lead times on tile, vanities and fixtures. Planning backward from the date you need the project finished keeps everything on track.

Make your decisions early
- Choose finishes before demolition. Having tile, fixtures and vanity selected and ordered prevents the most common delays.
- Order a little extra tile. Matching the same dye lot later can be difficult.
- Plan for how you’ll live during the work. For a bathroom remodel, decide which bathroom you’ll use in the meantime.
- Ask about permits early. Some projects need permits, which can add time.
